Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder

ADHD Q&A

What is ADHD?

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a chronic mental health condition that often starts in childhood and can continue into adulthood.

The underlying cause of ADHD isn’t well understood, but factors like premature birth, exposure to environmental toxins, and brain injury might increase your risk for ADHD.

What are the symptoms of ADHD?

Children with ADHD are unable to stay still and concentrate on tasks. They may run around or engage in reckless behaviors without fear of consequence, leading to poor performance at school and disciplinary issues at home.

ADHD symptoms aren’t something a child will grow out of, and while the behaviors might be less severe, they can carry into adulthood. ADHD can affect your behaviors and make it difficult for you to navigate your daily responsibilities.

Symptoms of adult ADHD can include:

  • Difficulty paying attention
  • Inability to focus
  • Impulsive behaviors
  • Excessive movement (hyperactivity)

While these issues may seem like the typical behaviors of young children, symptoms of ADHD are generally more noticeable and disruptive. They can cause significant problems at home, in school, and in social settings.
